1. Decoct these herbs first

1) toxic herb fu zi, chuan wu, cao wu —30-60 mins or until tongue is numbless
2) minerals, shells, stones long gu, mu li, daizhe shi, shi gao, shi jue ming, ci shi, zhen zhu, gui ban, biejia, shui niu jiao
3) some tonifying herbs

2. Herbs cooked last (added near end)

1) aromatic herbs with volatile ingredients bo he, mu xian, bai dou kou. sha ren, qing hao, jin yin hua
2) the effective ingredients tends to be damaged by long time cooking gou teng, da huang (for draining fire and discharge feces), fang xie ye

3. Wrap in gauze first

1) very slight in texture of herbs pu huang, hai jin shan
2) seeds with a lot of starch or heavy to sticky on the bottom che qian zi, ting li zi liu, yi san(formula), bi yu san , chi shi zi
3) villous and irritating to the throat xin yi hua, xuan fu hua
4) with bad smell and dissolved in the water wu ling zhi

4. Cook these herbs separately: precious or very expensive herbs, such as ren shen , xi yang shen, lu rong

5. herbs not cook but melted or dissolved in the strained decoction at the end e jiao, feng mi, yi tang, (mang xiao)

6. taken with the strained decoction mang xiao, zhu li (bamboo sap)

7. powder form xi jiao, lu rong, chuan bei mu, san qi, hu po, zhu sha
oral administration time

1) taken on an empty stomach in the morning drastic herb to purge feces and water
2) before meals tonics, expel parasite herb, or herbs for constipation and disorder of stomach
3) after meals irritating to the stomach, promoting digestion
4) specific time: calm the shen, relative purgatives, checking malarial disorder
