BODY FLUID JIN YE
I. Lung, Spleen and Kidney involved in water metabolism.
A. Lung: disperses and descends qi and body fluid. If this function of Lung fails, edema may
occur, usually in the face. This type of edema is often treated by inducing sweating, using
the opening and closing of pores (another function of the Lung) as the treatment
mechanism.
B. Spleen: transforms and transports food essence, which is derived from food and water
taken in. Failure of the Spleen to perform this function can lead to edema and/or damp and
damp accumulation.
C. Kidney: responsible for basis of yin and yang for the entire body. If there is a yin deficiency,
dryness and/or false heat with occur. If there is a yang deficiency, water cannot be steamed
and may accumulate in the body, resulting in edema or fluid accumulation.
II. Jin vs. Ye
A. Thickness
• Jin: thin, watery, clear, light
• Ye: thick, heavy, dense, turbid, cloudy
B. Distribution
• Jin: exterior, skin, muscles
• Ye: interior, blood vessels, eyes, ears, nose, mouth
C. Speed
• Jin: fast
• Ye: slow
D. Examples
• Jin: sweat, tears, saliva
• Ye: joint liquid, cerebral spinal fluid, marrow
E. Function
• Jin: transforms to blood
• Ye: transforms to blood and joint lubricant
F. Controlled by
• Jin: Lung
• Ye: Spleen and Kidney
III. Body Fluid and Internal Organs
A. Lung, Spleen and Kidney CREATE
B. Urinary Bladder HOLDS
C. San Jiao TRANSPORTS
D. Stomach SOURCE OF BODY FLUID
IV. Body Fluid and Qi
A. Qi transforms into and transports Body Fluid. If Qi is stagnant can result in edema or water
retention.
B. Qi holds Body Fluid. If Qi is deficient can result in spontaneous sweating, frequent urination,
leukorrhea.
C. Body Fluid nourishes Qi. Profuse sweating can cause a deficiency of Body Fluid resulting in Qi
deficiency. Shows as SOB, weakness, fatigue, shock.
V. Body Fluid and Blood
• Come from same source; can transform into each other; both Yin; profuse sweating can result in
Blood deficiency; loss of Blood can result in dry skin and lips.
VI. Abnormal Body Fluid
A. Deficiency
• Causes: low water intake; loss of Blood; Blood deficiency; dryness; heat
• Symptoms: constipation, dry stool; dry skin; thirst; eyes, nose, mouth dry; dry throat; scanty
urine
B. Water retention or accumulation
• Causes: Qi stagnation; Spleen, Kidney, Lung deficiency
• Lung: phlegm
• Kidney: edema
• Spleen: dampness
• Symptoms: edema, fatigue, phlegm, dizziness (from too much dirty damp rising); puffy
tongue, no thirst
VII. ESSENCE: JING
A. Pre-Natal
• Formation: from parents; stored in Kidney
• Function: nourish fetus, controls growth, development, aging, death; transforms into Kidney
Qi, tian kui, Yuan Qi, marrow
B. Post-Natal
• Formation: from food and water through Spleen and Stomach
